Lard
Pasture-Raised, Pure, Hand-Rendered USA Lard feeds your hair and skin extra-nourishing balanced fatty acids and the world’s highest Vitamin D3 content, second only to cod liver oil. Lard has been used in haircare since medieval times for hair growth and hair health management. Our lard is carefully hand-rendered to keep its precious rare nutrients in-tact.
Lard is the 2nd fat in the world that is highest in Vitamin D3, second only to cod liver oil! Vitamin D3 is the most bioavailable form of Vitamin D. Vitamin D delivers a myriad of health benefits, including supporting healthy, long hair. As it turns out, Vitamin D3 is involved in various signaling pathways in the hair follicle and has a direct (and critical) role in the hair growth (aka anagen) phase. Topical application of vitamin D3 has been shown to render protection against damage caused to the skin by UV light. Vitamin D reduces cell death, promotes cell survival, and reduces redness and inflammation.
Since pasture-raised lard is lighter and softer in texture, slightly higher in unsaturated fatty acids, and higher in certain nutrients like Vitamin D3 – it makes a perfect fat base in our shampoo soaps, conditioners, and hair oils.
Pasture-Raised, properly fed lard is low on the comedogenic scale: it will not clog pores nor cause inflammation, in fact it may help with those issues. Since it is slightly higher in unsaturated fatty acids, it provides a more bubbly lather and a squeakier clean.

Buttermilk
Local, Raw, Farm-Fresh, Grass-fed, Hand-Cultured Buttermilk to feed your hair the perfect food – high in essential vitamins, minerals, proteins, and fatty acids. Full-fat Jersey cow buttermilk is higher than goat milk in lactic acid and has the same moisturization content. Babassu Oil
Certified Organic Babassu Oil provides an extra foamy lather to build mounds of thick bubbles. This makes cleansing your hair an easier task without using pore-clogging palm or coconut oils. Babassu oil also helps maintain the hardness of your shampoo soap while in use and makes the bar last as long as possible in wet environments.
Olive Oil
Certified Organic, Cold-Pressed, Extra-Virgin Olive Oil has been used for thousands of years to make the best soaps in the world and is one of the major components of our shampoo bars. Olive oil provides a rich, smooth, silky shine to hair shafts while also retaining a mild, gentle cleanse. Olive oil is unique in that it’s very moisturizing, but not heavy.
Castor Oil
Certified Organic, Hexane-Free Castor Oil has been used for centuries to help heal damaged skin while also restoring new hair growth.* Also known as the “Palm of Christ”, its many priceless uses have yet to be overshadowed by any other known oil. Castor oil also helps to provide a thick, robust, and stable lather, while additionally strengthening the hair shafts and reducing split ends.
Jojoba Oil
Certified Organic Golden Jojoba Oil is actually a type of liquid plant wax that is claimed to be very similar to our skin’s sebum, providing a light moisturization without clogging pores. Jojoba oil has been very useful for haircare professionals, lending extra shine, strength, and manageability to hair health.
Abyssinian Oil
Abyssinian Oil is very similar to Argan oil but shown to be better in some ways. From multiple scientific studies, Abyssinian oil has been shown to provide superior protection against hair breakage and heat damage in professional salon settings. Shine and manageability are also markedly improved when incorporating Abyssinian oil into one’s haircare routine.
Kaolin Clay
Kaolin Clay helps detox your hair from the daily grime and air pollution from modern day living while also soothing and nourishing the scalp with trace minerals. This natural earthen clay assists with dandruff and encourages hair growth as well. For shaving, it lends an extra silky-smooth experience, but if a nick does occur – it helps stop and repair bleeding quickly. Just lather our soap on the area you need to shave and shave as you would normally (full shaving directions here).

Most consumers would say this product has no scent detectable at all or that any scent detected is only due to the nature of the ingredients.
NO SCENT OF ANY KIND WAS ADDED AS AN INGREDIENT TO THIS PRODUCT.
This product was made in our one and only facility where we manufacture all of our products (scented and unscented). Atmospheric scent may or may not transfer to a detectable level over to any unscented product.
We use exclusively unscented molds for making unscented products, these are even stored in separate containers to help reduce atmospheric scent transfer.
We thoroughly clean all manufacturing tools and surfaces between each use and keep our unscented products completely separate from our scented products (not touching).
Please keep in mind that our mailer boxes, tissue papers, cards, and peanuts have also been sitting in our same small business facility where we make scented products.
If any atmospheric scent is detected by sensitive buyers, we recommend to let the unscented product sit out (for a few days to a few weeks) in a dry atmosphere devoid of any scent with good air flow to allow any atmospheric smells to dissipate. Usually after the first use, any detectable atmospheric smell transfers will dissipate.

We recommend using within 1 year of first use for best results, as scents and contents fade and break down faster over time once disturbed.
On average, 1 shampoo soap will last most experienced users around 2 weeks of daily use, or about 14 hair washes on average.
Hair length, thickness, texture, and level of oil/grease/dirt to cleanse will affect this number. The longer, thicker, dirtier, and more textured your hair is, the more you will need to apply for a good wash. Another factor that will affect duration is if one is using the bar for more than just hair washing: for example, as a body soap and as a shaving soap in addition to a shampoo.

My husband and I started using these bars after trying various “non toxic” shampoos, and then trying the “no poo” method for a while. We love using these bars because the ingredients are clean and nourishing and leave our hair silky soft after a washing. I was surprised at how nice my hair felt after washing it- I definitely wasn’t expecting the softness. The bars lather really well and get nice and sudsy as you massage with water into the hair and they also last longer than I would expect!

It took a few weeks for my hair to adjust to this shampoo, but after that phase, this shampoo is the best thing to happen to my hair. My scalp is not itchy, and I no longer have to wash it everyday. It stays nice and clean for days with no residue. I have tried other perma earth shampoos, and this is by far the best one.

I use this shampoo bar on my son. While it’s technically not scented, it definitely does have a smell of its own, but I find it very mild and pleasant to the nose. It makes his hair so soft and it doesn’t need washing as frequently as it did when I was using his old baby shampoo. I plan to use this on my newborn when he arrives too. 🙂

I love the simple, natural ingredients in this product and it also works so well! I e tried other store brand “natural” hair products and they aquas left my hair super dry, frizzy, etc. I definitely had to go through the detox process when starting this shampoo but once my hair transitioned it’s been fabulous. I also bought a conditioner but barely use it, just occasionally one swipe on my hair if it seems a bit dry, but this shampoo suffices to hydrate and clean almost every wash!
Also, this is the only shampoo/soap I use for my daughter and her hair is gorgeous! Long, shiny, soft ❤️ APPROVED

I’ve been gradually ‘cleaning up my act’ for a few years and recently discovered the amazing benefits of pure & simple animal-based products. So relieved & grateful to find Perma-Earth! I started with this Buttercream soap about 6 weeks ago and my hair has honestly never been better. I’ve always had fine hair that was somewhat difficult to manage, however, through peri-menopause and menopause it just kept getting worse. I would typically use the Rose organic soap from Dr Bronners. It’s just like all the other “Dr.”_____ organic soaps. My hair would be clean but feel super dried out and “sticky” like my fingers would stick to it when running my hand through it while it was wet, resulting in pulled hairs. I switched to these bars hoping to get my hair more lush, lighter, and get rid of that ugly “clean” feeling I got after using the Drs. The results? Exactly what I hoped for. It took a few days, I think a week before my hair fully adjusted. After that period, when washing my hair it would always feel smooth and clean without that “sticky”ness I talked about earlier. My hair even got a little curly after using this and I have had straight hair my whole life. I ran through these bars pretty quick but I think I’m just rubbing too much on my hair. You can get a thick lather really fast and it feels sooo nice and smooth. If you don’t know which product to try first, this is the one! But make sure to get atleast 2-3 if it’s your first time! @ayydwin

I really love this unscented shampoo bar. I’ve gotten it multiple times and will continue to do so. It always leaves my hair perfectly cleansed and soft and silky. This is definitely one of my faves. I have no problem with scents and EO, but sometimes I just want a little break. I think an unscented shampoo and a scented conditioner bar is my favorite combo for my hair.

I have to admit, I was really nervous to switch to a bar shampoo after using nothing but liquid soaps my entire life. But my best friend (who has similar hair) raved about it and got me thinking I should give it a whirl. I’ve got some fine hair, so it’s been a real challenge to find a product that doesn’t weigh my ‘do down. After a few days of the break-in period, there’s no turning back. My hair is soft and voluminous like never before. It holds it’s style all day with very minimal product. I bought this to use as a body soap and shaving soap. I’m so glad I did because my skin loves it. I personally think all the shampoo bars do a great job as shaving “cream.” I find I get a much closer shave and have far less if any razor burn. It leaves my skin feeling soft and nourished. I have sensitive skin and a lot of things irritate me, my skin reacts really well to the unscented soap.

I originally found PermaEarth looking for magnesium lotion on the Holistic Mother’s Instagram page, and then started reading on these shampoo bars. I bought a couple to start for my mom and I. We were both hesitant to utilizing a bar of shampoo, but I can say we will never go back to any other shampoo. I originally did not follow the instructions on the website and skipped the detox period. DO NOT SKIP IT. My mom did not skip it and had amazing results right away. Once I used it CORRECTLY, I was amazed. I have naturally very curly hair, and my curls have never looked better. My mom has very fine hair, and she has SO MUCH volume now. My first bar lasted me about a month and a half. However, my mom is still on her first bar from 3-months ago. If you’re on the fence about drying a bar of shampoo – this is your sign to DO IT!

I bought this a little while ago but waited until winter break to give it a try (I’m a teacher) just in case I went through a longer detox period. After 2 washes, I am HOOKED and will never go back to other shampoos! I was expecting a long detox period, but that did not happen for me, which I think is maybe because 1) I did not use a lot of hair products to begin with and 2) more importantly, I OBSESSIVELY read and re-read the directions many, many times before I started. I left the directions up on one tab on my computer for a week before starting and would read the directions frequently, and prior to trying the shampoo soap, I would think through the process when I was in the shower. I think my over-the-top approach really paid off!
The first wash was definitely an adjustment – not only because it was a different process but also because holy cow, my arms got a workout! I have long hair, so I made sure to divide my hair into sections to make sure I got enough soap distributed throughout my hair. My hair felt OK after the first wash – not waxy or greasy, and my hair definitely more prone to tangles than usual when wet. I didn’t notice a huge difference in how it felt once it dried after the first wash.
The second wash was much better – I got more of a feel for when the soap was starting to lather just by running it over the layers of hair, and I got a much foamier lather than the first time. This time after I dried my hair, I could not believe how soft it was! I swear my hair has not felt this soft and silky since childhood. It’s amazing and I will never go back to any other shampoo.
I should also mention that I used the unscented conditioner, and I think that really helped with the tangling. Please never stop making this, I love it!!

Truly a wonderful product! My hair is healthy and soft, and I wash it far less frequently than I did using conventional shampoos. Slight learning curve to get a good lather in the beginning.

I have struggled for years, no exaggeration, with finding a natural shampoo that ACTUALLY made my hair feel clean and healthy. Everything I tried would leave a residue or my coarse, wavy hair would just get really dried out, frizzy, and shapeless. The first time I used this, my scalp actually felt CLEAN!! I didn’t go through any sort of detox, maybe because I had already been using more natural shampoo or because I followed the directions exactly. But after my second wash, I didn’t lather as much and my scalp didn’t feel quite as squeaky clean as the first time, so I really do think it just comes down to following the directions to get the most out of your wash day with this soap. I can go 7-9 days without washing so this soap will last me maybe two months, which is great. I am so happy they offer unscented options as well, because I have MCS and react to so much stuff. This will be a staple in my hair care routine for as long as PermaEarth keeps making it, and I’m excited to get through this bar and try some of their other unscented soaps and essential oil soaps as well! We love this unscented option for the kiddos. I feel safe using it on the baby and on sensitive skin. One of our children is prone to really bad eczema flare ups and nothing seemed to help. Poor guy couldn’t wear shoes at one point it got so bad. We tried countless products and prescriptions but nothing seemed to help, until we found perma earth! I honestly can’t rave enough about this shampoo/body wash. We started using it months ago and he hasn’t had one single flare up since! I swear by it and won’t use anything else.

ok, I have been attempting shampoo alternatives for literal YEARS with zero success and had kind of given up trying. my hair is really thick and heavy, and prone to grease build-up. I’ve tried no poo methods, vinegar rinses, herbal rinses, baking soda, egg yolks, etc. to no avail. I found out about perma earth and got two of these shampoo bars recently to try and read the “tips” that came with them about the transition period when beginning to use the lard soap. however, to my complete surprise, there IS no transition period for me. it worked the very first time I used it! my hair feels fluffy, soft, and free of any build-up or grease. I lather twice in the shower and rinse, and that’s it. I also have not had to re-wash my hair for several days after use.
I can’t tell you how happy and relieved I am to have finally finally finally found something that works for my hair and that doesn’t introduce all kinds of random chemicals and endocrine disruptors to my body. I’m so excited to try out more of their products!!

Loveeee this shampoo! It lathers nicely, which I need because I have long and thick hair. It’s definitely harder washing my type of hair with the bar soaps but it’s all worth it! I mean look at the curls I’m achieving with my curler! My hair not only styles better but it’s holds a style longer too! Just make sure to follow the shampooing instructions (found on the website) and you’ll fall in love with your hair!

I washed my hair for the first time using this new bar—and my hair already feels amazing. I’ve been using a plant-based shampoo bar for some time already, I don’t condition my hair and very rarely use dry shampoo (just the powder kind). My hair is fine and gets oily within a day or two despite my low maintenance routine and I’ve been looking for a shampoo with more animal products in it. This bar, even though unscented, still has a really like smell to it. I read the instructions again and again and worked up a thick lather and made sure to rinse really well. My hair felt less tangled when combing, and had a really nice clean scent to it. So far it doesn’t feel waxy or heavy—and I think that’s due to me not using a lot of products or normal shampoo/conditioner to begin with. I can’t wait to see how my hair improves moving forward. I also used the bar on just my upper body and noticed how soft my skin felt immediately after my shower. I’m so excited to purchase more body soap and shampoo. I already make my own tallow balm at home but may need to try their whipped tallow.
So in short, I definitely would recommend this bar even after just one wash!

I can tell that this is a high quality shampoo bar and I really, really wanted it to work for my hair but unfortunately, this bar leaves a heavy waxy residue in my hair after a month of use. I have thin waist length hair and I’ve tried everything to make this bar work. Before using this bar, I used all natural Under Luna shampoo and conditioner for three months so, I ruled out the possibility of a prolonged detox phase and I’ve come to the conclusion that maybe this shampoo bar is just too heavy for my thin long hair. I’ve lathered and lathered and rinsed and rinsed and I think it’s just time to try out a different bar before losing hope. Overall, the quality is amazing but this bar is not for me.

The shampoo bar you used before was actually a detergent, not real soap. Great simple shampoo bar! I usually use one of these in between using some of the more fun or fancy bars. I have noticed that it lathers the best the first few washes, so I always get more excited to open a new bar than to finish the one I have started. These bars have helped my itchy scalp and I usually go three or four days between washes.

Hi Bailey! Thank you for your feedback! The first few washes being the best lather might be due to leaving the soap in a wet place. Do you use one of our aerating soap dishes? This may help. Since you go so long between washes, we recommend removing the soap from your shower or bath where there may be constant high humidity and putting it in a dryer place to dry more deeply between uses, which should increase the lathering ability more. Love this bar, I have used many of their scented soaps and have loved them all but this is my new favorite! Using it along with a scented conditioner leaves my hair happy and lightly fragranced. I also use it on my face! Never too dry! It is so moisturizing that at times I opt out of the conditioner and my curls feel great!

In the past, I tried tallow shampoo bars and never had any luck. I’m so glad I decided to try this one (thank you for all the information about why lard is often better for hair than tallow)! My hair has never felt better! Also, I’m seriously impressed with how the bar lathers! Definitely give it a try!

I have had terrible dandruff for a year or so. Nothing would work. I tried every over the counter shampoo and even a prescribed shampoo one time. THEN, I tried this natural shampoo. I’m still going through the detox phase, but my scalp hasn’t been this healthy in years. I absolutely recommend this product to anybody with greasy hair and an unhealthy scalp.

I love this soap so much! It was my first shampoo bar and I fell in love. Sometimes I don’t want a scented product for my hair and this definitely fits the bill. Great for shaving! I use it on my baby without worrying about harsh chemicals hurting his delicate skin. It’s helped his cradle cap and dry patches on his legs. Just all around a great bar of soap I always want to have on hand.

I was happily using the shampoo bars and conditioner bars and then my hairdresser convinced me they weren’t good for my hair even though I was so happy with my hair. Now I’m back because I was getting this weird dry icky buildup on my scalp from using salon products. I like to pair this bar with a scented conditioner bar (on the ends.) This is my go to. I prefer no essential oils and no fragrances in my products, so I had to try this out. It took 5 washes to get through the detox, and it was so worth it. I wash my hair every 2-3 weeks with this bar, and also use it to wash my body in between. I also have very long hair (past my waist) and medium thickness (definitely not fine or thin but not the thickest I’ve ever seen), so it works for us too! Stick it out!

This has been my 4th or 5th attempt at finding a bar shampoo that works (I had given up hope in finding on that works). I found this company from the @strong.sistas on instagram and I am so glad I did! This shampoo is amazing and I can’t stop looking at and touching my hair. I have super fine, dry hair that breaks and frizzes easily and all those issues are gone after a week of use (3-4x) with this shampoo. I am also losing less hair in the shower and in my brush. And my hair is sooo shiny and full of body now!
I do live in an area with extremely hard water and I found a diluted vinegar rinse is necessary after shampooing to keep the greasy/waxy feel at bay. But the results are better than any expensive salon product.
I also bought a bar conditioner from perma earth, but this shampoo is so moisturizing, I don’t even need conditioner (I apply it to the tips for now).
Thanks so much for this awesome bar, please don’t discontinue it!

I bleached my hair for years and years and it had pretty much withered away to nothing before I started using this shampoo. Now it’s thick and full AND some of my natural curls have returned! I can feel the difference using this soap makes—my hair is softer and healthier and my scalp is less irritated since there’s no yucky chemicals or bad fragrances. I honestly didn’t even realize what a toll “normal” shampoos and conditioners from beauty salons were taking on my hair until I switched. If you’re thinking about buying this shampoo bar, think no more! Just do it!
