Phenoxyethanol (Green Tea Extract)

  • Phenoxyethanol is an organic preservative to prevent the growth of bacteria, mold, fungus, and yeast in skincare products with any water content (such as hyaluronic acid and aloe vera juice).
  • Naturally found in green tea leaves, phenoxyethanol is used in many natural lotions to preserve the safety and efficacy of water-based products. We could literally call it “green tea extract” – but would that convey the truth?
  • We only use phenoxyethanol at a 1% maximum in our formulations, which is the official safe usage rate said to prevent skin irritations yet still ensure product safety.
  • Instead of a water-based product lasting mere weeks, phenoxyethanol lengthens the preservation quality to years!
  • We choose to be open and honest with our preservative ingredients, rather than try to hide them under more natural sounding names such as “extracts” or “fermentations”.

Phenoxyethanol is an oily, colorless liquid with a slight rose scent. It is a naturally occurring substance found in chicory and green tea. It is used as a preservative for its strong and effective anti-microbial properties. It is in a wide variety of both leave-on and rinse-off organic water-based cosmetics including skin care products and a variety of other personal care products. Phenoxyethanol has been tested and reviewed by experts around the world who have concluded that it is safe to use in the proper amounts (1% or less) in external applications.

Phenoxyethanol has been safely used since the 1950s as a preservative in cosmetics and personal care products which contain a water content that can cause spoilage very quickly. It is highly effective in preventing the growth of dangerous pathogens, yeast, bacteria, and fungi that cause water-based products to spoil and could seriously harm users. Phenoxyethanol helps protect us from irritation, infection, and disease as it keeps products from becoming contaminated by microorganisms.

Please keep in mind that simply not touching a product still doesn’t keep it safe from atmospheric spores and microbes that float freely in the air everywhere. Unless one makes and keeps the product and all ingredients in a vacuum, nothing other than a strong anti-microbial preservative will keep harmful pathogens from growing like a petri dish in a product that has any water content. Remember that water equals life, which is especially true for bacteria, molds, fungi, and yeasts.

We use Phenoxyethanol in our milk lotions and many of our products which contain water to prevent spoilage and disease from multiplying and spreading at a dangerously rapid pace.
