For Balding, Thinning, and Dry Hair Types

Experience true food for your hair and skin with real, nutrient-dense, traditionally handcrafted soap made with old-fashioned ingredients. Our artisanal shampoo soaps are handmade with carefully curated local, grass-fed, pasture-raised, and organic ingredients – proudly sourced from small family farms and homegrown here in the USA. What we can’t source locally, we seek the highest quality: certified organic, minimally processed, and fair-trade ingredients to feed your hair and skin from the outside-in. No detergents or surfactants are used in any of our shampoos.
When washing properly, our basic unscented formula is suitable for all hair types used as-needed with an optional conditioner. Some scents and additional ingredients on top of our basic formula may alter results for each individual.

Top 3 Tips for Beginners:

  1. Please keep in mind that scent information in this product’s scent tab is based on majority feedback.
  2. Beginners should educate themselves on the possibility of a short detox period and the correct washing technique.
  3. Our All-In-One Shampoo – Body – Shaving soap bars are also suitable for regular body washing, face washing (facial soap directions here), and shaving (shaving directions here). Our ingredients are LOW on the comedogenic scale – so your pores are nourished and cleansed, but never clogged.

Saw Palmetto

Saw Palmetto is well-loved by herbalists for it’s traditional use to reduce hormonal hair loss.* Saw Palmetto may block 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT.* DHT is the molecule responsible for hair loss, which shows much promise for Saw Palmetto to those who experience hormone-caused hair loss.*

Hemp Seed Oil

Hemp is a member of the Cannabis sativa species of plant. You may have heard this plant referred to as marijuana, but our Certified Organic, Extra-Virgin, Unrefined, Food-Grade Hemp Seed Oil is really a different variety of Cannabis sativa. Hemp seed oil is a clear green oil made by cold-pressing hemp seeds. It’s different from cannabidiol (CBD), which is an extract produced from hemp flowers and leaves. Hemp seed oil typically doesn’t contain the chemical tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which provides the “high” associated with marijuana use. Hemp seed oil, while not containing CBD or THC, is said to have many health benefits, among them that it protects hair from damage while helping to moisturize, strengthen, and assist hair in growth.
Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are considered by experts to be good for hair when taken as an oral supplement and hemp seed oil has plenty of both. For example, a 2015 study found improvement in the hair diameter and hair density of participants who took omega-3 and omega-6 oral supplements over the course of six months. Researchers on the study also discovered that omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in combination with antioxidants prevented hair loss in participants who took them.

Amla Oil

Certified organic amla oil has also been used in ancient Ayurvedic medicine. Amla oil is made from pressing the seeds of the gooseberry tree. It nourishes the scalp and strengthens the hair strands, from root to tip, to give you thick, long & shiny tresses. This oil smooths frizzy hair, making it flowing and easy to comb. Amla oil has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine to help with hair nourishment and promote a healthy scalp.  However, there is limited research on the use of amla oil for hair care. For example, one study examined 17 plants commonly used for hair treatments. Amla oil extract was shown to be the second strongest inhibitor of 5-alpha-reductase, which is an enzyme that can lead to baldness. [source]

Organic Horsetail

  • The horsetail herb is known as a living fossil. Naturally high in biotin, it has been exalted for its use in natural hair treatments for sustaining growth and hair health.
  • Horsetail is a plant that is used to strengthen and improve the elasticity of the hair fiber, helps regulate the hair growth cycle, and reduces inflammation and improves cell turnover to create an optimal environment on the scalp for healthy hair growth.
  • Horsetail oil is rich in minerals that support the development of the hair fiber, specifically silica. It not only strengthens the hair fiber and supports its elasticity, but it also adds sheen and texture. Silica is made of silicon and oxygen; one 2016 study suggests that a higher silicon content in the hair may be associated with a lower rate of hair loss.

Organic Nettle Leaf

  • Nettle leaves are rich in silica and Sulphur which helps in making hair shinier and healthier.
  • Rinsing hair with nettle extracts and water has been shown to result in re-growth of lost hair and also helps in restoring the original hair color.
  • A 2015 study on rats showed that nettle helps to soothe scalp inflammation, strengthen hair, stimulate hair growth, and has antimicrobial properties.
  • nettle works to prevent hair loss by blocking DHT, a precursor to testosterone which is the culprit in androgenetic hair loss.
  • Many types of hair loss are characterized by chronic inflammation, so the anti-inflammatory properties of nettle may help to reduce this as well.

Organic Ginseng Root

  • If there was one star ingredient for this powerful herbal formula, Ginseng would steal the show! A 2015 study proved that ginseng promotes hair growth in humans, as well as a 2018 study.
  • Ginseng is formed by active components called ginsenosides that have a positive effect on hair growth and its cycle.
  • ginsenosides have an anti-oxidation effect that alters the hair growth cycle and affects keratinocytes and dermal papilla growth. These active components act as reversal agents when it comes to the UV-ray exposure that causes hair weakening and loss. Additionally, their anti-aging properties are attributed to slowing down deterioration of collagen and increasing the natural production of hyaluronic acid.
  • The nutritional elements of ginseng such as saponin and phytosterols contribute to the maintenance of a healthy scalp. Saponin is an antibacterial compound that fights infections effectively and phytosterols are believed to be effective in minimizing premature greying of hair.
  • Ginseng is believed to prevent hair loss by enhancing blood circulation to the scalp and hair follicles, which help nourish and strengthen the hair.

Organic Gotu Kola

  • Coming in at a close second place is Gotu Kola, known to help prevent and stop hair loss.*
  • Once gotu kola extract is applied to our scalp (specifically, our hair follicles), it will extend and reduce the telogen phase. This phase is the resting phase of the hair cycle where our hair stops growing and we may experience shedding.
  • Gotu kola is a hydrating ingredient that suits sensitive skin, which is more prone to redness and irritation. It is an unbeatable moisture regulator that travels deep into the skin and hair to make them look hydrated, soothing and nourished.
  • For many years, Ayurvedic practitioners have employed gotu kola, also called Mandukaparni, as a vegetable and herb that can help maintain the health of skin and hair and slow the aging process.
  • It is a good source of pentacyclic triterpenoids, which have potent anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anticancer, hepatoprotective, and wound-healing effects.
  • Furthermore, gotu kola helps promote collagen production, so it is often used in anti-aging treatments.

Lard

Pasture-Raised, Pure, Hand-Rendered USA Lard feeds your hair and skin extra-nourishing balanced fatty acids and the world’s highest Vitamin D3 content, second only to cod liver oil. Lard has been used in haircare since medieval times for hair growth and hair health management. Our lard is carefully hand-rendered to keep its precious rare nutrients in-tact.
Lard is the 2nd fat in the world that is highest in Vitamin D3, second only to cod liver oil! Vitamin D3 is the most bioavailable form of Vitamin D. Vitamin D delivers a myriad of health benefits, including supporting healthy, long hair. As it turns out, Vitamin D3 is involved in various signaling pathways in the hair follicle and has a direct (and critical) role in the hair growth (aka anagen) phase. Topical application of vitamin D3 has been shown to render protection against damage caused to the skin by UV light. Vitamin D reduces cell death, promotes cell survival, and reduces redness and inflammation.
Since pasture-raised lard is lighter and softer in texture, slightly higher in unsaturated fatty acids, and higher in certain nutrients like Vitamin D3 – it makes a perfect fat base in our shampoo soaps, conditioners, and hair oils.
Pasture-Raised, properly fed lard is low on the comedogenic scale: it will not clog pores nor cause inflammation, in fact it may help with those issues. Since it is slightly higher in unsaturated fatty acids, it provides a more bubbly lather and a squeakier clean.
Our Lard is:
  • Slowly and carefully hand-rendered in our facility from the farm-fresh raw source
  • NEVER bleached or ultra-processed for a “white look”
  • Pasture-Raised from LOCAL and USA small family farms

Buttermilk

Local, Raw, Farm-Fresh, Grass-fed, Hand-Cultured Buttermilk to feed your hair the perfect food – high in essential vitamins, minerals, proteins, and fatty acids. Full-fat Jersey cow buttermilk is higher than goat milk in lactic acid and has the same moisturization content. The famously beautiful Egyptian Queen Cleopatra was a wise proponent, bathing in fresh buttermilk daily.
Buttermilk is high in multiple different proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Farm-fresh, raw buttermilk can have dozens of naturally occurring probiotics along with alpha-hydroxy acids like lactic acid, which promote cell renewal and rejuvenation of beauty factors such as brightness, tone, and complexion maintenance. Milk is considered a “complete protein” and “near-perfect food” meaning it contains all nine of the essential amino acids necessary for your body to function at an optimal level, plus all the essential Omega 3, 6, & 9 fatty acids in balanced proportions in addition to most of the vitamins and minerals your body needs. And buttermilk is even better! If raw milk can grow a baby calf into a cow within a few months, think of what it does to your hair!
Our Buttermilk is:
  • Slowly and carefully hand-cultured from the farm-fresh raw source
  • When the farm-fresh raw buttermilk arrives in our facility, it is frozen and used first-in, first-out to ensure the best nutrient content

Babassu Oil

Certified Organic Babassu Oil provides an extra foamy lather to build mounds of thick bubbles. This makes cleansing your hair an easier task without using pore-clogging palm or coconut oils. Babassu oil also helps maintain the hardness of your shampoo soap while in use and makes the bar last as long as possible in wet environments.

Olive Oil

Certified Organic, Cold-Pressed, Extra-Virgin Olive Oil has been used for thousands of years to make the best soaps in the world and is one of the major components of our shampoo bars. Olive oil provides a rich, smooth, silky shine to hair shafts while also retaining a mild, gentle cleanse. Olive oil is unique in that it’s very moisturizing, but not heavy.

Castor Oil

Certified Organic, Hexane-Free Castor Oil has been used for centuries to help heal damaged skin while also restoring new hair growth.* Also known as the “Palm of Christ”, its many priceless uses have yet to be overshadowed by any other known oil. Castor oil also helps to provide a thick, robust, and stable lather, while additionally strengthening the hair shafts and reducing split ends.

Jojoba Oil

Certified Organic Golden Jojoba Oil is actually a type of liquid plant wax that is claimed to be very similar to our skin’s sebum, providing a light moisturization without clogging pores. Jojoba oil has been very useful for haircare professionals, lending extra shine, strength, and manageability to hair health.

Abyssinian Oil

Abyssinian Oil is very similar to Argan oil but shown to be better in some ways. From multiple scientific studies, Abyssinian oil has been shown to provide superior protection against hair breakage and heat damage in professional salon settings. Shine and manageability are also markedly improved when incorporating Abyssinian oil into one’s haircare routine.

Kaolin Clay

Kaolin Clay helps detox your hair from the daily grime and air pollution from modern day living while also soothing and nourishing the scalp with trace minerals. This natural earthen clay assists with dandruff and encourages hair growth as well. For shaving, it lends an extra silky-smooth experience, but if a nick does occur – it helps stop and repair bleeding quickly. Just lather our soap on the area you need to shave and shave as you would normally (full shaving directions here).

Essential Oils

Pure and therapeutic-grade Essential Oils are included for a more natural scent and some therapeutic benefits. Please keep in mind that not including fragrances will reduce the scent hold, decreasing the linger time and strength compared to what many are used to with store-bought products. Learn more about our essential oils we use HERE and read about this product’s scent and scent strength in the product’s scent tab.

SHAVING: Please read our detailed instructions by clicking here.

  • Hair Growth – Our shampoo bars tend to cause faster and thicker hair growth. As a side-effect, more frequent root colorings/treatments may be needed for colored/treated hair.
  • Colored & Treated Hair – Our shampoo bars tend to have no effect on the shade of permanently colored hair or texture treatments. However, semi or demi-permanent hair-colorings or texture treatments can wash out faster due to the vigorous washing method required for a natural shampoo soap lather. We ask you to weigh your priority of healthier, thicker and faster-growing hair with your semi-permanent hair treatments. Please consider a more permanent hair color shade if you do need to color your hair.
  • More Curly/Textured Hair – Our shampoo bars are sulfate-free and totally natural, therefore they will strengthen the natural disulfide bonds in your hair, which will bring out your natural hair texture. Your natural hair texture usually has more volume, curl/texture, and definition than what you were getting with detergent or surfactant shampoo products.
  • It often takes more time and effort to use natural shampoo bars, but it’s well worth it in the end. Not only do you end up with more naturally nourished hair, you also end up with a cleaner environment!

On average, 1 shampoo soap will last most experienced users around 2 weeks of daily use, or about 14 hair washes on average.

Hair length, thickness, texture, and level of oil/grease/dirt to cleanse will affect this number. The longer, thicker, dirtier, and more textured your hair is, the more you will need to apply for a good wash. Another factor that will affect duration is if one is using the bar for more than just hair washing: for example, as a body soap and as a shaving soap in addition to a shampoo.
When you first start using shampoo soaps you will go through them a lot faster than after you adjust – this is due to the detox/adjustment period for most beginners. Here is an article about this if you are interested: https://perma-earth.com/shampoo-soap-detox-for-beginners/
Another beginner’s adjustment is not properly washing (not applying and lathering enough), which causes soap residue in certain places and feels much like the detox symptoms. Here is our article about how to wash properly: https://perma-earth.com/directions/soap-directions/

4 reviews for Patchouli Herb & Hemp All-In-One Soap

  1. Melissa Babiak

When you want that fresh hippie scent, look no further! Sometimes patchouli can be really in your face where you smell like you just came out of a head shop, but this gives off just enough where someone might walk by you and give you that look IYKYK 😎 As with all the other shampoo bars, this one left my hair feeling soft and full of volume.

  2. Jennifer Connor

I agree with the other reviews that this bar’s scent is not over powering. I love that it also exfoliates. I only bought a sample but will be getting the bigger bar next order. The Hippie soap pairs well with the Egyptian musk oil.

  3. primeval.alchemist

The smell is seductively natural, not over powering like other patchouli scented things.
Although this bar is high in medicinal properties which can be drying if used too frequently, I feel this bar is both clarifying and hydrating making it perfect for my dry hair/skin for frequent use and has become my go-to bar.
Use this if the Miracle Mud is too much.

  4. Kasey Curtis

I bought this shampoo for my Mom. She loves it! She has short hair and said it made it so soft. The smell is not over powering like some patchouli products.
