HOW TO MAKE LIQUID FROM BAR

For those who need conditioner when using our shampoo soap bars, our conditioner bars help reduce the waste of water transport, single-use plastic containers, and dispensers that are so often chosen for convenience with liquid conditioners (you can also make your own liquid from our bars too, directions below). It takes a bit more time and effort to use natural conditioner bars, but not only do you end up with clean and naturally nourished hair, you also end up with a cleaner environment!

Beginner Tips

  • SOME individuals find they need much less or no conditioner at all after switching to our nourishing shampoo soap bars.
  • MOST hair types will still feel the need to use a conditioner to some degree, especially on the ends for dry, damaged, frizzy, or curly hair types.
  • Dry scalps may use conditioner on their scalps to help with dandruff caused by dryness since conditioners help moisturize.
  • For a styling effect, some hair types (curly, frizzy, dry, damaged) love to leave-in some conditioner (not rinsing it all out). You may need to wash your hair more frequently (once per day) when using leave-in styling products.
  • For a lighter condition for hair types that get weighed down easily – try applying the conditioner BEFORE washing, rinsing it out, then washing your hair with our shampoo.
  • Any hair type may use our conditioner (in bar or liquid form – directions to make liquid from bar are found below) if used correctly as needed and where needed.

Some shampoo soap bars (such as our shampoo soap bars made with honey) will determine how much conditioner each individual may need as well. Please take into consideration the shampoo type you are using!

IMPORTANT:

  • Trial and error is necessary to determine the correct amount and method for each individual depending on their:
  • hair type (curly/straight, thick/thin, dry/oily, etc.)
  • which shampoo soap bar they pair with their conditioner (for instance, a honey shampoo is more moisturizing than a regular shampoo soap bar)
  • the season or environment the hair is currently exposed to
  • water quality (hard/soft water, well water, etc.)
  • what other products currently being used on their hair
  • their haircare history and what products were used prior
  • It is usually best to experiment with the conditioners AFTER you have gone through any adjustments using natural shampoo soap bars for the first time. Make sure your washing technique is correct before blaming any issue on the conditioners (such as soap residue from poor shampoo lathering). Learn more about the common adjustments from chemical poos to real shampoo soap bars here.
  • Some hair types may prefer some scents or essential oils to others. We suggest beginners first try our unscented bar for a clean slate!
  • New users can experiment with using the conditioner as a bar or turning the bar into a liquid to see which form they prefer (directions on how to turn bar into liquid are found below). To do this: get a conditioner bar, cut it in half, turn one half into liquid while using the other half as a bar.

DURATION: Our 2.25 oz Conditioner Bar lasts most users 2-6 MONTHS, while a 3.5 oz Shampoo Soap Bar lasts most users 2-4 WEEKS.

An average rule of thumb is a 3:1 ratio of shampoo soaps to a conditioner bar (3 shampoo soaps for every conditioner bar)

How To Use The Conditioner Bar

1. APPLY the conditioner bar directly onto your freshly washed, rinsed and dripping wet hair where you would like a conditioning, softening, detangling, and moisturizing effect.

  • For hair that is weighed down easily, try to apply the conditioner BEFORE washing on your wet hair, then rinse out and wash.
  • For dry scalps, swipe the bar directly on the head to help with dandruff and dryness.

For medium-long length hair: Take the bar in your hand, holding the bar firmly while you swipe it down the length of your hair in the direction of hair growth, supporting your hair on the opposite side with the palm of your other hand. This should look like a sandwich: with your hands being the bread, the conditioner being the meat, and the hair being the cheese as you glide it down. Focus on dry spots, especially the ends of your hair.

Apply generously and take your time. This is not like liquid conditioner to just slap it on and go. Bars must be worked in with the water for optimal effect. You may also use it on your skin as a shower/bathing lotion too!

2. COMB the conditioner residue left in your hair with fingers or a comb to make sure the conditioner is spread evenly and thoroughly. You may need to add a little more water to comb it and spread it around smoothly. Apply only where your hair or scalp is dry – if your hair feels greasy after, then either you applied too much, left it in for too long, did not rinse well, or applied it where your hair did not need it.

3. Let the conditioner bar SIT in your hair while you wash your body/shave/etc. – 5 minutes or more being ideal for dry hair types. If you have an oily hair type, try rinsing out immediately after application to see if this is enough moisturization for your hair type.

4. RINSE thoroughly OR LEAVE SOME IN with just a very light rinse. The leave-in method works wonders for some hair types: dry/ curly/ wavy types, NOT for oily or straight/super fine hair types (unless you are going for the wet look!) For a natural curling effect after you get out of the shower/bath: leave in some conditioner, brush hair while still damp – *scrunch* – then let air-dry!

Leave-In Option

Using a leave-in conditioner can be very helpful with certain hair textures, especially with dry, damaged, curly, wavy, or frizzy hair types. If used this way, many of our customers have found they can eliminate all sorts of other products they normally would use (such as gels, hairspray, curling, etc.)

To do the leave-in option: do not rinse out all the conditioner after your wash. You may need to wash your hair more frequently (once per day) when using leave-in styling products.

If you need to apply more after the shower/bath application, simply wet the bar and rub it in your hands. Then use what is on the hands to comb through the hair, especially focusing on the ends.

Storage : Do not leave in water, or let water rest on a wet surface as they will dissolve or become too soft and goopy to use correctly. Preferably, they should be stored in an area with good air flow and minimal surface contact. Store in a dry, safe place out of direct sunlight or heat. We recommend our soap dishes for storing your conditioner bar, you can find them here: https://perma-earth.com/product/soap-dish/

Leftover Bits and Pieces

With leftover bits and pieces, you have a few options for using up the remainder of the product!

  • Liquid/Cream: follow the same directions below to make the liquid from a bar. This is our first recommendation.
  • Using As-Is: leave the pieces next to the sink or shower in a container to rub in wet hands and apply to hair until nothing left of the bar pieces remain. You can even add to some hot water to a container and shake it well to create a very diluted conditioner water.
  • Remake/Remold: This method may require some experience and patience to complete correctly, but if you choose to experiment, then here are the basic instructions. Heat all your extra broken conditioner pieces together slowly and carefully for short bursts on low level in the microwave – or for a short time on low level on the stovetop – preferably in a double boiler. This will turn the pieces into a liquid, which will harden again when cooled. You will get the best results when you pour the conditioner liquid as it is turning from clear to opaque: pouring a conditioner while it is too hot and clear will create an uneven texture that breaks apart easier. It also helps to have a silicone container (such as a single silicone cupcake mold) that you can pour it into and pop back out again when it cools and hardens.

Feel free to contact us so we can help troubleshoot any issues! We are always here to help you get the results you are looking for by using the conditioner bars.

EXPIRATION

We recommend using the conditioner bar within 3 years of manufacture date (found on the price tag of the container), or within 1 year from first use. The best by dates are also listed on the “expiration” tab in each product listing so you can view this before purchasing the product.

Make Your Own Liquid Conditioner

No, you cannot do this with shampoo soap bars. Shampoo soap bars are entirely different from conditioner bars. To learn more, visit our article Why No Liquid Soaps?

STEP 1. Measure liquid ratio in tempered glass measuring cup that will hold more than final amount. Liquid must be water-based for longest shelf life. Using anything else (tea, coffee, milk, rose water, aloe juice, etc.) can shorten shelf-life and might need to be refrigerated between each use.

THE SPECIFIC RATIOS FOR EACH CONDITIONER BAR ARE ON THE BACK LABEL FOR YOU TO SEE BEFORE MAKING!

10:1 = liquid:bar for a NO BEESWAX bar (old recipe that will be discontinued)

this comes out to be 22.5 oz liquid for a NO BEESWAX bar (old recipe) 2.25 oz bar

13:1 = liquid:bar for a bar WITH BEESWAX (new recipe from now on)

this comes out to be 29 oz liquid for a bar WITH BEESWAX (new recipe) 2.25 oz bar

STEP 2. Microwave liquid in measuring cup to a boil (or boil in a pot on stovetop) and unwrap bar. Make sure to add back any water amount that evaporates! You want to have the exact right ratio of water above when you add your bar to the liquid. Covering the container will help decrease water evaporation.

STEP 3. Immediately add bar to the boiling liquid. Stir until bar is completely dissolved, remove from heat, cover, then stir occasionally until warm. Again, make sure to add back any liquid that was lost.

STEP 4. While still warm and a thin liquid, but not piping hot, add any additional ingredients (such as our liquid conditioner booster, or your choice of fragrance or essential oils while referring to their manufacturer’s maximum recommended scent ratio), then pour into pump container (here is our conditioner pump refill) and let cool to room-temperature before using (it will thicken as it cools). Store in bathroom and use within 18 months of making if you added our liquid conditioner booster, but within 3 months of making if you did not.

These instructions are also on every conditioner bar back label.

USE AS YOU WOULD REGULAR LIQUID CONDITIONER, ONLY AS NEEDED AND WHERE NEEDED. Let it sit in your hair for a few minutes before rinsing out for a deeper condition, or rinse out immediately after applying and spreading for a light conditioning effect, or apply it BEFORE washing for an even lighter conditioning effect. You may even use it as a leave-in for styling dry/curly/frizzy hair types. You may also use it as a scalp moisturizer for dryness and dandruff, then rinse out well.
  • If your hair still feels dry or unmanageable after washing correctly, we highly recommend to use our conditioner after using our shampoo soap bars. Our formula is very light and hard to over-apply, unless you have super baby-fine hair or an oily hair type even after adjusting to our shampoo soap bars. These hair types can apply the conditioner only where needed and rinse out before washing so their hair isn’t weighed down after the wash, yet the tips are still protected and moisturized.
  • You can use our conditioner everywhere on your hair, scalp, or skin and it leaves everything feeling silky smooth while hair is shiny and manageable. Of course if you are an oily hair/scalp type, just stick to applying conditioner where you need it. Our shampoo soaps are so nourishing that some hair types might not even need to use a conditioner. Some hair types are still dry though after shampooing, even with a dry flaky scalp – these types can feel free to try using our conditioners all over their head and scalp.
  • The main suggestion we have for everyone is… EXPERIMENT! Cut a conditioner bar in half – turn one half into liquid and try it, and the other half use as a bar during your next wash, then try washing without using a conditioner after for your 3rd wash to see which way you like better. It is usually best to experiment AFTER you have gone through any adjustments using natural shampoo soap bars. Learn more about the adjustment from chemical poos to real shampoo soap bars here.
