Why Hair Breakage Happens
Hair breakage can be caused by many factors:

- Teasing hair during styling
- Chemical Damage
- UV/Sun Damage

Herbal Hair Remedy Shampoos
Why Chemical Damage Happens
Permanent hair damage can come from chemical hair treatments, treated water, chlorine/salt exposures, and using the wrong products. View our product recommendations below for remedies to these concerns.
Please keep in mind that damage is sometimes PERMANENT. Deep damage is irreversible and is only remedied with encouraging new Hair Growth. Take the best measures against future damage with your new hair growth.
- Harsh salon or at-home chemical treatments
- Insufficient time for hair to rest between chemical treatments
- Constant exposure to chlorine pools, treated water sources, or salty ocean water (wet your hair with pure filtered water and use our de-tangling spray or conditioner bars before exposure to these)
- Using inappropriate, harsh, or stripping hair products for long periods of time
- Not using hair products correctly, resulting in damage
Colored Hair
Shampoos & Matching Conditioners for Color Control & Protection
Conditioners To Protect, Strengthen, & Soften
Leave-In De-Tangling Spray To Protect, Strengthen, & Soften
These recommendations will help to protect colored hair from brassiness. They also help rebuild the damage which comes from permanent chemical dying. Permanent hair colors generally do well and last longer with our hair products!
DISCLAIMER: Our shampoos usually increase hair growth substantially. Hair roots will need to be dyed more often to sustain the same color throughout the hair.
WARNING: Semi-permanent or low-quality dyes wash out faster due to the more vigorous washing method for using real shampoo soaps. Consider the benefits of healthier hair from using our shampoos versus having a semi-permanent hair color before using.

All of our hair products are sulfate-free, detergent-free, surfactant-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free and CGM (Curly Girl Method) Friendly! Read our product recommendations below and learn why curly hair types LOVE our haircare products!
- Curly hair is especially prone to breakage and dryness due to the disulfide bond structure shapes in the hair shaft. This unique structure causes more moisture loss, exposure to the elements, and a weaker bond – unlike straight hair types.
- Curly hair types can benefit from more moisturizing shampoos. But, any of our shampoos will work well when used with sufficient conditioner!
- A Leave-In De-Tangling Spray can help with certain hair textures, especially with dry, damaged, curly or frizzy hair types. Just apply after a wash while hair is still wet, scrunch well, and leave it alone to dry.
- If our Conditioner Bars are used correctly, many find they can get rid of other styling products.
- To do the leave-in option with conditioner bars: do not rinse out all the conditioner after your wash. While hair is still wet, scrunch well, and leave it alone to dry. Read our Conditioner Bar Instructions for more directions on how to use for curly hair types.
- If you need to apply more after the shower/bath application, simply wet the bar and rub it in your hands. Then use what is on the hands to comb through the hair, especially focusing on the ends.
- Apply our Hair Oil before a hair wash to further help in occasional deep conditioning.
- Since curly hair is especially prone to dryness and breakage, we also recommend a weekly Hair Oil treatment.
Dandruff/Itchiness
Shampoos for Dandruff & Scalp Health
Shampoos for Scalp Revitalization
Use our Conditioner Bars on your scalp before and after every wash to help prevent dryness and irritation.
Massage in the Hair & Scalp Oil and let sit for at least 30 minutes before each wash. Or use as a weekly scalp deep overnight treatment.
Dandruff can happen for many reasons, including:
- Fungal overgrowth (Buttermilk is a natural anti-fungal in all of our shampoos. We also offer zinc oxide and herbal shampoos listed in the links above!)
- Oily/dirty hair from not washing well or consistently (see OILY HAIR tab below)
- Dryness (see DRY HAIR tab below)
- Scalp irritations (see Sensitive Scalp tab below)
- Overexposure to the elements (see UV/Sun Damage tab below)
- Exposure to damaging chemicals or treatments (see Chemical Damage tab above)

Oily Hair
Have you tried our basic buttercream shampoo and unscented conditioner but still feel like your hair is oily? Are you sure you are following our washing directions? Make sure that it isn’t soap residue making your scalp and hair feel oily or waxy. Please contact us before trying a new shampoo soap!
- Shampoos for Oily Hair Types with Matching Conditioners to help balance scalp oils
- Dry Shampoos to extend the time between washes
Switching from detergent/surfactant shampoos to our basic shampoo soap can balance oil production to a manageable level on the scalp. There are certain shampoos we have formulated for this specific issue if our basic formula is not enough. Remember that detergents/surfactants strip your hair and scalp of moisture, which increases sebum (oil) production. This results in a vicious cycle of constant hair-washing and extra unnecessary oil production.
Oily hair types can need consistent DAILY washes to achieve cleaner and healthier hair, even with our shampoo soaps.

We have seen many reports of customers successfully reducing or eliminating their psoriasis symptoms after switching to our products. One theory is that our products are high in nutrients people need for their immune system, like Vitamin D3. Buttermilk is also high in Alpha-Hydroxy Acids, which overturn skin cells faster and improve cell regeneration and regulation.
Your skin and scalp absorbs what you put on it. Think of a nicotine patch or a poisonous frog that you are warned to never touch. Your skin will use the nutrients or toxins applied to it, for good or bad. So those skincare and hair products with questionable ingredients can just be making the issue worse! Making the switch to our Sensitive Scalp recommendations can be enough to clear up the concerns (see tab below). Otherwise, please see our recommendations below.
Why Does Scalp Psoriasis Happen?
- Psoriasis is an immune-mediated disease that causes inflammation in the body. It’s a disease with an unclear cause that is characterized by inflammation caused by dysfunction of the immune system. Some visible signs of inflammation like raised plaques and scales on the skin. Plaques can look different for different skin types.
- This occurs because the overactive immune system speeds up skin cell growth. Normal skin cells completely grow and shed (fall off) in a month. With psoriasis, skin cells do this in only three or four days. Instead of shedding, the skin cells pile up on the surface of the skin. Some people report that psoriasis plaques itch, burn, and sting. Plaques and scales can show on any part of the body. They are commonly found on the elbows, knees, and scalp. https://www.psoriasis.org/about-psoriasis/

Any of our hair products can be used with straight hair. Our recommendations above can help with volume, hair growth, texture, strength, and less of a heavy/oily feel.
WARNING: Most new customers have never used REAL SOAP to wash their hair before. An unexpected result is that formerly “straight” hair types actually start to show their true natural texture! Many customers reports seeing beautiful waves and even some curls in their formerly “straight” hair. This can be seen after using our shampoo soaps and conditioner bars! We have heard and seen countless times more volume and texture definition just by switching to real soap. When one stops using detergents/surfactants that strip and weaken the hair shafts, they see what benefits real soap gives!

Sunlight and UV light damage is a common concern for outdoor lovers, athletes, and those exposed to the elements. Common issues include dryness, dullness, bleaching, and breakage. See the corresponding tabs for more information and recommendations in these instances.
Why Sun/UV Damage Happens
- Over-exposure to UV light or sunlight can dry hair faster. This weakens the hair shafts by stripping any protective layers and bleaching the hair.
- UV light or sunlight can even cause heat damage in extreme situations, leading to breakage, dullness, and dryness.
- UV light or sunlight is a natural and very potent oxidant. Oxidation essentially ages the hair and scalp faster than normal.
Thick Hair
All of our hair products will work with long hair types – please read the directions! Since thicker hair types use the products faster they can take advantage of our bulk discounts.
Thin/Fine Hair
