Why does tallow bead sometimes?
We can compare farm-fresh grass-fed tallow to natural raw honey in this instance. Like raw natural honey that crystallizes, farm-fresh suet tallow can develop hard beads of tallow over time… We don’t make it with these lumps of love! Tallow beads take more work to melt on the skin when rubbed in. Beading occurs randomly and inconsistently; we can’t predict or prevent natural beading. If you want to re-melt your product to dissolve the beads, remove the product from the container. Gently and slowly re-heat the tallow until melted, then turn off the heat. Re-whip or stir the tallow while cooling, then put it back in the container. We appreciate the integrity of our natural ingredients made in small batches!
Why does tallow smell / look / feel different sometimes?
We can compare tallow to raw honey in this instance as well. Raw natural honey can have a different taste, color, or texture due to different locations and seasons of the harvest. Farm-fresh tallow can also have a different smell, color, and texture due to different seasons or cows. Even from the same farmer and location. These are due to factors out of our control. These factors include: foraging diet, age, genetics, environment, and how the animal is butchered. We appreciate the integrity of our natural ingredients made in small batches!

However, this product was made in our one and only facility where we manufacture all of our products (scented and unscented). Therefore, atmospheric scent may or may not transfer over at a detectable level to any unscented product.
We take every precaution possible to reduce surface-level atmospheric scent transfers by:
- Using extra manufacturing tools ONLY for unscented products.
- Our “unscented” manufacturing tools are stored in completely separate containers.
- Cleaning and sanitizing ALL manufacturing tools and surfaces between each batch.
- NEVER letting our unscented products touch our scented products (either directly or indirectly)!
Please keep in mind that our shipping supplies are stored in our same small business facility where we make scented products, so they may have an atmospheric scent transfer.

Apply a HEAVY amount of coverage to exposed skin and spread evenly. Best used on warm hands and skin for an easier spread. Heavy application will lead to a white cast! Good news: a whiter cast provides a stronger and longer coverage, if you don’t mind the appearance! Mix with your favorite make-up to match your skin’s unique shade.

Recommended to use on any skin exposed to sunlight, reapplied every 30 minutes in direct sunlight exposure or during active wear. If application is rubbed or wiped off, a reapplication will be necessary for full protection at all times.

The container is very small so I usually reserve it for our face cream as we don’t use sunscreen typically on whole body. Highly recommend especially for a safe face cream.

As a family of 5 that lives on the ocean, we spend quite a bit of time in the sun and we need protection for those long days on the water. We have everyone in the family from a baby, to two very active boys, a bald husband and a mom who has sensitive skin. The sun balm from perma earth protects us all with ease! Not only does it work great, but it’s so clean ingredient wise. Rubs right into skin without white residue and doesn’t leave us all feeling greasy after application. I don’t need to use massive amounts of soap to get it off at the end of the day either which is really nice! We used this stuff all summer and barely went through half a container! And again, we’re on our boat or at the beach almost every day. Pretty incredible if you ask me! I am so happy with this product, definitely something we will always have! I have acne prone skin. I love getting outside in the summer but it’s always been challenging to protect my face from my sun when I have product sensitivities. Since I learned about tallow and have been using these incredible products, I finally feel comfortable putting this sun protection on my face! This is the only sun product I have found (so far) that doesn’t break me out and actually maintains good coverage! A little goes a long way, and be sure to be responsible about re-applying on long adventures, but WHOA. I am so glad I now have this option in my arsenal to keep my skin both happy and protected! Doubles as moisturizer (since I use tallow anyway) and this has got to be in my TOP FIVE FAVES here on Perma-Earth’s site!! I know I won’t burn if I use this. Advice to new users: start small and rub it in really well, it’s a bit white-ish but will blend in. There is a reason this container is much smaller than your average supermarket sunscreen tube. If you are heading somewhere warm and will need to reapply, place the container in a plastic bag and put in the snack cooler. It’s much easier to apply when softened after a few minutes of sitting out, but it will stay good for longer if you don’t let it get warm all day long. HIGH QUALITY comes in little containers 😉 If I could give this product more than 5 stars I WOULD. Sensitive skinned sun-lovers rejoice!!

Wonderful product. Have used several years ago when my diet wasn’t so great and it was super effective and I felt confident my skin was getting the best product without all the toxins plus the protection after spending some time in the sun. Since I’ve gone to a mostly animal based diet, I find I don’t need SPF most of the time. I will still use this every once in awhile if I’m going to be out for extended periods of the day, esp. for my face. Smells great!

This sun cream is honestly really the best you can find. When I saw the ingredients Permaearth uses for this new sun cream I knew I had to order. When I applied it on my face and saw how smooth it rubs in and how it does not give me a white cast it made me really happy. When I used to use drug store sunscreens and chemical ones I would break out so much and they would irritate my skin. But this sun cream is so soothing on the skin. Great product

This Sun Tallow butter is amazing! It’s soft and easily spreadable with clean, non-pore clogging ingredients! Sunscreen always broke me out, but this is so light! I’m glad to find it doesn’t have heavy oils in it, as oils like jojoba break me out INSTANTLY! It does give a small white cast if you put too much on, but I’ve found that using less it blends right in! I choose not to put makeup on top of this because it tends to break me out when I do; however, I genuinely don’t feel like I need any makeup after I put this on! It makes me feel clean and even and protected! I haven’t worn this out on a beach day yet, but I’m confident that I’ll be more than protected from those burning rays! I definitely recommend!

This is incredibly the best sunscreen I’ve used. We live in Hawaii and get lots of sun on a daily basis. This sunscreen is easy to apply in comparison to other mineral ones and I have to concur with another reviewer who mentioned it gives you the best glow/tan ever. I’m looking forward to trying the SPF 55. If you find other mineral sunscreens hard to apply – this one is for you. So silky and smooth.

I love this stuff! I usually prefer a shirt & hat as my main sunburn prevention but with this stuff is a lifesaver for my face, feet and legs when on the beach or boat all day! This is also the only form of “sunscreen” my 15yo brother can use in his face without irritating his eyes. Love that is is also eco friendly and leaves my skin feeling great!
It does go on white, if you apply just barely enough you can’t really see it. However, if you want really full coverage that won’t wash off in the surf a thick coat works so well!
The smell is mild, smells like tallow. I can keep it in my beach bag on the 90 degree fl beach without completely melting – it does get very soft which is actually nice for application.

I love this tallow butter sunscreen! I got the scented one in the sample size and it worked really well. It smells so nice and is excellent protection. I got the higher SPF, and I only put it on my spots that I most likely burn and it did a great job of protecting my skin but I was still able to tan a bit through it! I was afraid this would be too greasy and heavy but it’s not! I was also surprised at how small the jar was and afraid I’d use it up too fast. I quickly found out that won’t happen because you only need to use a small amount to get coverage on your face. I used too much the first time because I could still feel it on my face and neck hours later. The next time I took a small amount and dotted my face and neck. The product warms and spreads as you rub it in. A bit of white shimmer but goes away quickly. Very silky and creamy texture. Nice scent!

Okay, we loved the original higher SPF sunscreen but we love the 10-20 SPF even more! It is a thinner consistency so it’s easier to spread onto your skin and it still protects you from the sun. We moved to Florida recently and I was worried about burning into the sun but ever time we are going to be in the sun for a prolonged period of time we use Perma Earth 10-20 SPF and have never burned once! We are all getting beautiful tans and getting all of the benefits from the sun. We are LOVING it!

I purchased the SPF 35-50 option just under a year ago – still have 2/3rds of the jar left! Seriously a little goes a long way with this product but re application is KEY if you are out in the sun for long periods of time. I bought the coconut scented one (10-20 spf) and it smells SO GOOD. I live in Miami FL and go to the beach often but hate toxic sunscreens, so this one is a lifesaver. I love my sun cream! I wear it daily (on my face and neck only) to prevent uv rays from penetrating. It does go on white but I massage it in pretty good and it does fade quickly. I just make sure to put it on first thing in the morning and give myself time before leaving the house. I love that it’s made with tallow and therefore it’s also my daily moisturizer (I use a different tallow butter at night).
So happy to have a clean and safe sunscreen to use – I won’t use anything else now – I’m done searching. I have only used the original suncream, so I’m looking forward to trying the new scented one and also the primer.

Very happy with this. While it’s shocking white at first… with a little rubbing and melting action against the skin, it mostly blends in. For even more blending, I mix it in my hand with another Perma-Earth tallow cream product before applying. I love knowing I’m using a non-nano mineral sunscreen with trusted ingredients. I don’t personally use sunscreen on myself, but I use this for my one year old son as both a sunscreen and a diaper rash cream. It works absolutely wonderfully as both. Full day beach trips in only a diaper are no match for this product. Yes, it’s slightly hard to rub in enough to avoid the white out effect on a wiggly toddler, but I don’t mind being able to make sure I’ve applied the product everywhere I want. It’s thick and a little goes a long way. The fat base means it repels moisture well and I find I don’t have to re-apply very often.
It’s also a GREAT diaper rash cream. We haven’t had anything severe on our hands, but redness and rashy patches go away much faster with this product than any of the other crunchy/organic products I have. Again, a very little goes a long way.

I can’t speak to this product’s effectiveness since I wasn’t outside for longer than 30 minutes but I felt good knowing I was protected and my skin was moisturized. I will say though if you ever want to be a clown at a costume party, all you need to do is wear this and just not rub it in. I applied way too much the very first time and my son and I looked like ghosts no matter how much I rubbed it in. He was not pleased. A little goes a long way too for diaper cream so I may continue to use it mostly for that.

I have extremely sensitive skin and have been searching to find a simple effective sunscreen for myself and for my newborn. It leaves a white hue which is expected from a mineral sunscreen but goes away pretty well if rubbed in properly. It does not leave you feeling like you have goop on your skin either. I had read from someone reviewing that it also makes a great diaper rash cream and can say that they were correct. The rash always disappears after one or two applications and I do not feel bad putting it on babies delicate skin. Because of this cream I will be trying the unscented products on baby with my next order!

This sunscreen is great. Of course, with it being a zinc sunscreen you are going to get a bit of a white cast. I find if you continue to rub it in, warming it up and working it into the skin then it’s not too bad. But definitely still a bit white. Probably wouldn’t be a good option as a face sunscreen for darker skinned ladies. The consistency of this product is really nice though. Silky smooth!

A little goes a VERY long way!! I’m super pale and have sun sensitivity, and have been looking for a nice natural sunscreen for myself and my family that’s also coconut free. This is amazing!! I’ve gone on 30 minute walks in 100+ degree weather midday, and didn’t get a sunburn! Tip: Start with a very small amount, and if you notice any white streaking, keep rubbing, it WILL disappear.
