I would typically use the Rose organic soap from Dr Bronners. It’s just like all the other “Dr.”_____ organic soaps. My hair would be clean but feel super dried out and “sticky” like my fingers would stick to it when running my hand through it while it was wet, resulting in pulled hairs. I switched to these bars hoping to get my hair more lush, lighter, and get rid of that ugly “clean” feeling I got after using the Drs. The results? Exactly what I hoped for. It took a few days, I think a week before my hair fully adjusted. After that period, when washing my hair it would always feel smooth and clean without that “sticky”ness I talked about earlier. My hair even got a little curly after using this and I have had straight hair my whole life. I ran through these bars pretty quick but I think I’m just rubbing too much on my hair. You can get a thick lather really fast and it feels sooo nice and smooth. If you don’t know which product to try first, this is the one! But make sure to get atleast 2-3 if it’s your first time! @ayydwin

I really love this unscented shampoo bar. I’ve gotten it multiple times and will continue to do so. It always leaves my hair perfectly cleansed and soft and silky. This is definitely one of my faves. I have no problem with scents and EO, but sometimes I just want a little break. I think an unscented shampoo and a scented conditioner bar is my favorite combo for my hair.

I personally think all the shampoo bars do a great job as shaving “cream.” I find I get a much closer shave and have far less if any razor burn. It leaves my skin feeling soft and nourished. I originally found PermaEarth looking for magnesium lotion on the Holistic Mother’s Instagram page, and then started reading on these shampoo bars. I bought a couple to start for my mom and I. We were both hesitant to utilizing a bar of shampoo, but I can say we will never go back to any other shampoo. I originally did not follow the instructions on the website and skipped the detox period. DO NOT SKIP IT. My mom did not skip it and had amazing results right away. Once I used it CORRECTLY, I was amazed. I have naturally very curly hair, and my curls have never looked better. My mom has very fine hair, and she has SO MUCH volume now. My first bar lasted me about a month and a half. However, my mom is still on her first bar from 3-months ago. If you’re on the fence about drying a bar of shampoo – this is your sign to DO IT!

I bought this a little while ago but waited until winter break to give it a try (I’m a teacher) just in case I went through a longer detox period. After 2 washes, I am HOOKED and will never go back to other shampoos! I was expecting a long detox period, but that did not happen for me, which I think is maybe because 1) I did not use a lot of hair products to begin with and 2) more importantly, I OBSESSIVELY read and re-read the directions many, many times before I started. I left the directions up on one tab on my computer for a week before starting and would read the directions frequently, and prior to trying the shampoo soap, I would think through the process when I was in the shower. I think my over-the-top approach really paid off!
The first wash was definitely an adjustment – not only because it was a different process but also because holy cow, my arms got a workout! I have long hair, so I made sure to divide my hair into sections to make sure I got enough soap distributed throughout my hair. My hair felt OK after the first wash – not waxy or greasy, and my hair definitely more prone to tangles than usual when wet. I didn’t notice a huge difference in how it felt once it dried after the first wash.
The second wash was much better – I got more of a feel for when the soap was starting to lather just by running it over the layers of hair, and I got a much foamier lather than the first time. This time after I dried my hair, I could not believe how soft it was! I swear my hair has not felt this soft and silky since childhood. It’s amazing and I will never go back to any other shampoo.
I should also mention that I used the unscented conditioner, and I think that really helped with the tangling. Please never stop making this, I love it!!

I have struggled for years, no exaggeration, with finding a natural shampoo that ACTUALLY made my hair feel clean and healthy. Everything I tried would leave a residue or my coarse, wavy hair would just get really dried out, frizzy, and shapeless. The first time I used this, my scalp actually felt CLEAN!! I didn’t go through any sort of detox, maybe because I had already been using more natural shampoo or because I followed the directions exactly. But after my second wash, I didn’t lather as much and my scalp didn’t feel quite as squeaky clean as the first time, so I really do think it just comes down to following the directions to get the most out of your wash day with this soap. I can go 7-9 days without washing so this soap will last me maybe two months, which is great. I am so happy they offer unscented options as well, because I have MCS and react to so much stuff. This will be a staple in my hair care routine for as long as PermaEarth keeps making it, and I’m excited to get through this bar and try some of their other unscented soaps and essential oil soaps as well! We love this unscented option for the kiddos. I feel safe using it on the baby and on sensitive skin. One of our children is prone to really bad eczema flare ups and nothing seemed to help. ok, I have been attempting shampoo alternatives for literal YEARS with zero success and had kind of given up trying. my hair is really thick and heavy, and prone to grease build-up. I’ve tried no poo methods, vinegar rinses, herbal rinses, baking soda, egg yolks, etc. to no avail. I found out about perma earth and got two of these shampoo bars recently to try and read the “tips” that came with them about the transition period when beginning to use the lard soap. however, to my complete surprise, there IS no transition period for me. it worked the very first time I used it! my hair feels fluffy, soft, and free of any build-up or grease. I lather twice in the shower and rinse, and that’s it. I also have not had to re-wash my hair for several days after use.
I can’t tell you how happy and relieved I am to have finally finally finally found something that works for my hair and that doesn’t introduce all kinds of random chemicals and endocrine disruptors to my body. I’m so excited to try out more of their products!!

I washed my hair for the first time using this new bar—and my hair already feels amazing. I’ve been using a plant-based shampoo bar for some time already, I don’t condition my hair and very rarely use dry shampoo (just the powder kind). My hair is fine and gets oily within a day or two despite my low maintenance routine and I’ve been looking for a shampoo with more animal products in it. This bar, even though unscented, still has a really like smell to it. I read the instructions again and again and worked up a thick lather and made sure to rinse really well. My hair felt less tangled when combing, and had a really nice clean scent to it. So far it doesn’t feel waxy or heavy—and I think that’s due to me not using a lot of products or normal shampoo/conditioner to begin with. I can’t wait to see how my hair improves moving forward. I also used the bar on just my upper body and noticed how soft my skin felt immediately after my shower. I’m so excited to purchase more body soap and shampoo. I already make my own tallow balm at home but may need to try their whipped tallow.
So in short, I definitely would recommend this bar even after just one wash!

I can tell that this is a high quality shampoo bar and I really, really wanted it to work for my hair but unfortunately, this bar leaves a heavy waxy residue in my hair after a month of use. I have thin waist length hair and I’ve tried everything to make this bar work. Before using this bar, I used all natural Under Luna shampoo and conditioner for three months so, I ruled out the possibility of a prolonged detox phase and I’ve come to the conclusion that maybe this shampoo bar is just too heavy for my thin long hair. I’ve lathered and lathered and rinsed and rinsed and I think it’s just time to try out a different bar before losing hope. Overall, the quality is amazing but this bar is not for me.

Great simple shampoo bar! I usually use one of these in between using some of the more fun or fancy bars. I have noticed that it lathers the best the first few washes, so I always get more excited to open a new bar than to finish the one I have started. These bars have helped my itchy scalp and I usually go three or four days between washes.

Hi Bailey! Thank you for your feedback! The first few washes being the best lather might be due to leaving the soap in a wet place. Do you use one of our aerating soap dishes? This may help. Since you go so long between washes, we recommend removing the soap from your shower or bath where there may be constant high humidity and putting it in a dryer place to dry more deeply between uses, which should increase the lathering ability more. This has been my 4th or 5th attempt at finding a bar shampoo that works (I had given up hope in finding on that works). I found this company from the @strong.sistas on instagram and I am so glad I did! This shampoo is amazing and I can’t stop looking at and touching my hair. I have super fine, dry hair that breaks and frizzes easily and all those issues are gone after a week of use (3-4x) with this shampoo. I am also losing less hair in the shower and in my brush. And my hair is sooo shiny and full of body now!
I do live in an area with extremely hard water and I found a diluted vinegar rinse is necessary after shampooing to keep the greasy/waxy feel at bay. But the results are better than any expensive salon product.
I also bought a bar conditioner from perma earth, but this shampoo is so moisturizing, I don’t even need conditioner (I apply it to the tips for now).

I love everything about this shampoo bar. I find that its very soothing to my scalp and my hair has been growing much more since I started using it in conjunction with the unscented conditioner bar. It lathers up easily, has a mild natural scent, and lasts for a long time (and I have a lot of hair so if you have short hair it would last even longer). If I had to use just one shampoo for the rest of my life, this would be it!

I’ve used this bar twice as both a shampoo and body soap. I love the look of the bar! It reminds me of ivory hues in rococo designs and I could look at it all day. It produces a scentless fluffy lather and if used as just a body soap lasts a long while, even when using shower gloves. I will continue to buy this and have it on hand to use along with my other bars.

I’ve been looking for a basic, nourishing, unscented shampoo product and this one is the best I’ve tried! You really don’t need to use very much to get your hair clean so it will last you quite some time.

This bar is great! You wouldn’t think that a lard soap would sud up and leave you squeaky clean but my, oh my it does! It even leaves my hair squeaky clean even after an oily pre-poo and leaves my scalp clean with no itch! I am also one with extremely sensitive skin and one thing i noticed after 1 week is that my legs aren’t breaking out after my shower which is a constant issue for me even with other natural soaps. IT’S GREAT! This bar alone replaced my shampoo and body wash and i couldn’t be happier with my purchase!

LOVE this shampoo/body bar. Has done wonders for my thick, out of control curly hair moving to a city that has terribly hard water. I was not as familiar with lard soap before my purchase and am happy I tried it. Leaves my hair feeling deeply cleaned. My hair Stylist has said “to keep up whatever I am using” as she could not see any damage, which has not been said to me in years from using the expensive name brand salon products.

Very happy with this unscented traditional bar of soap/shampoo. It makes my hair look darker, shinier and thicker. The most expensive shampoo in the drugstore made with chemicals can’t compare to this, the high quality all natural ingredients give good effective results. I am absolutely in love with this type of traditional lard soap and i’m so happy to find it here.
