  • Tallow is an excellent moisturizer used to soothe dry skin. It’s thick enough to handle the toughest rough patches, but light enough to absorb quickly into the skin. High-quality tallow is said to be loaded with the bioavailable forms of vitamins A, D, E and K, plus full of essential fatty acids not commonly found in common modern day skincare. Your skin absorbs these nutrients just like nicotine from a quit-smoking patch – or even a deadly dose of poison from handling a toxic frog.   • Yes, our tallows are in smaller containers compared to the big bottles of store-bought lotions: a little goes a very long way! The longer you consistently use tallow, the less you will need, as tallow actually helps to balance and regulate your skin – rather than dry it out as most lotions do. This isn’t an advantage for the seller, but it is fantastic for the consumer! Tallow regulates the skin to rely LESS on moisturizers, instead of training it to depend on MORE moisturizers over time. Therefore, tallow IMPROVES your skin over time, instead of subtly and slowly making it become dependent upon outside moisture, like chemical lotions do.
  • Suet, as opposed to muscle fat, contains a higher level of saturated fatty acids and a triglyceride known as glyceryl tristearate, otherwise called “stearin”. Suet therefore softens and smooths the skin’s surface better than regular tallow fat, while also helping to maintain and protect the skin’s barrier.
  • Tallow resembles our natural sebum (skin oil) and absorbs into the skin easily, which helps to balance the skin’s sebum production after a cleanse. Pair this with the fact that high-quality tallow is non-comedogenic (will not clog pores when used correctly) – and you have a skin-match success for any skin type!
  • The Vitamin D3 found in tallow induces the expression of antimicrobial peptide genes in human skin and plays a significant role in preventing opportunistic infections.
  • Moreover, grass-fed tallow contains conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Certified Organic Vitamin E

This isn’t your regular (questionable) Vitamin E, this is:
  • Only derived from USDA Certified Organic sunflowers – NO soy, wheat, gluten, or synthetic ingredients – there is no other purer Vitamin E on the market.
  • Natural Vitamin E (d-Alpha Tocopherol) boasts 2X (200%) more skin absorption and bioavailability for our bodies to utilize than synthetic “vitamin e”. The most obvious differences between the two types is where Vitamin E is sourced and they even have different chemical names. “dL-Alpha Tocopheryl Acetate” (synthetic Vitamin E) comes from petrochemicals. Phenoxyethanol

  • An organic preservative to prevent the growth of bacteria, mold, fungus, and yeast in skincare products with any water content (such as hydrolyzed silk).
  • Naturally found in green tea leaves, phenoxyethanol is used in many natural lotions to preserve the safety and efficacy of water-based products.
  • We only use phenoxyethanol at a 1% maximum in our formulations, which is the official safe usage rate said to prevent skin irritations yet still ensure product safety.
  • Instead of a water-based product lasting mere weeks, phenoxyethanol lengthens the preservation quality to years!
  • We choose to be open and honest with our preservative ingredients, rather than try to hide them under more natural sounding names such as “extracts” or “fermentations”.

△ Beading & Other Inconsistencies

Farm-fresh suet tallow in it’s raw (unprocessed and natural) state can be compared to farm-fresh raw honey. If you have ever had raw honey crystallize after sitting in your cabinet, the beekeeper probably told you it is doing exactly what that product does naturally, and it can be gently re-heated to go back to a more fluid, consistent texture state. Raw, unprocessed honey still has molecular memory – the compounds tend to draw back into their natural state over time, remembering their original composition. This is the same story with 100% grass-fed whipped farm-fresh suet tallow – except that it beads instead of crystalizes. We have not been able to determine exactly the reasons for beading, whether due to abrupt temperature fluctuations, atmospheric pressures, humidity levels, or additional ingredients: beading is a total mystery we are still trying to pin the precise cause of (and we will probably never be able to). Some tallow jars will bead, while others from the same batch stored in the same location do not! The beekeeper will be able to relate: as some honey jars crystallize, while other jars from the same batch do not. We learned this from having our own honeybees for a few years – it is a natural happening with high-quality products, although inconvenient.
You may also notice that raw natural honey (like farm-fresh tallow) is different in texture, taste, and color at different seasons – even from the same farmer and location. This is because of the seasonal availability of food for the bees and other environmental factors. Again, a very similar thing happens with grass-fed pasture-raised tallow: the texture, scent, and color vary at different seasons – even from the same farmers and locations. These are undetermined factors we have no control over due to the seasonal changes of environments and adapting natural genetics.
Despite these inconsistencies, the end performance and value of the product is still the same! With beading, it takes a few more seconds to massage the product on the skin to melt the beadings, that’s the only inconvenience. The other factors of “imperfections” are always a possibility with all-natural ingredients: affecting their scent, texture, color, and consistency. Since the ingredient is still fitting to the description of “100% grass-fed suet tallow” or “raw natural honey” as per our example – the product still works perfectly naturally and is still functioning exactly as stated and as nature intended. We could add more processed ingredients or chemical emulsifiers to remedy this, but we see this extra step as only compromising the benefits of our farm-fresh, natural, animal-based products to maybe only gain a slightly more consistent texture – it’s not even a guarantee! Just like our natural animal fat soaps will never lather like palm-based detergents, our hand-rendered tallow-based products can’t compare to the artificial consistency of highly processed and industrialized ingredients used in other body products.
Therefore, we feel that it is best to consider these inconsistencies as proof of the integrity of our ingredients, and take pleasure in knowing we are rubbing in a more wholesome skin food a little longer than if the texture, color, or scent was exactly “as-expected” like synthetic or highly processed creams are. In short, we do the best we can with what nature gifts us – we hope that you are able to enjoy a truly superior and natural product for your body, despite any organic inconsistencies!

    I love all the tallows, but this one is amazing. A few days ago I was putting on some make up which I have not for a while, and some eyeshadow had fallen below my eye. I have heard the tallows can be used to remove make up but never got around to trying it. Mostly due to the fact that during lock down and up till now I’ve not really worn any.. but when I saw the eyeshadow had dusted down below my eye, what I used to do was get a qtip and get it wet with warm water and a bit of soap and that would result in the area being red, smeared and uneven. Huge pain. But this time I remembered the tallow.. So I grabbed the closest tallow to me and gently swirled the qtip in it and began to just rub the area that needed a touch up. It came off effortlessly and with little to no need for a touch up. I was completely floored. I used it later on that day to remove it completely and again was just totally blown away. It all came off so fast and easily with just a bit of tallow. I will definitely use this from now on to remove it. Cannot recommend enough.

    I really like this primer. I use it morning and night and it certainly makes my skin look more “alive” (especially during the cold doldrums of winter). The only thing is, I really have to work it in my hands first- the tiny white beads that don’t exactly blend into the formula completely need a little more work than your other butters. Other than that, the scent is pretty and I am enjoying this butter more so than some of the others because of it’s luxurious feel.APPROVED

    Smells amazing not too strong for me but strong smells don’t bother me. My skin is sooo soft and looks more luminous. I wear it under my makeup and apply to chest and neck. It’s not oily so my makeup stays put but it is moisturizing.

    I’ve been applying to my chest area & lower neck and truly seeing amazing results! Brighter skin tone & preventing wrinkles. I apply 3-4 times a week. A small amount goes a long ways! My tip… apply after the shower when skin is still damp and it goes on even and smoothly.

    This is the third whipped tallow I have used from permaearth and I love it. I have been using it for about three weeks after washing my face with face the day or the unscented buttermilk soap bar. There has been a noticable difference in the illuminosity of my skin and less noticable pores. I am fairly young and don’t have too many lines to take care of but the few that were developing have almost completely disappeared. Confidence in how my skin looks has gone through the roof! It also is not very heavy. I was a little hesitant to purchase this for the price in case it didn’t work for me but it was well worth the investment. While the scent is enjoyable I am happy that it is half of what it was previously (it may of otherwise been a bit much).

      This is my favorite nighttime moisturizer, it’s super hydrating, smells wonderful, and I love that it has pearl powder and squalane – you cant go wrong with this one. I also use it during the day sometimes and find that when i where makeup its an excellent primer. @natgeonb

    I LOVE the way this looks on my skin under makeup. I kept looking at it in the mirror and was obsessed his glowy it made this dry skin look and feel. My only complaint is the scent. For me it is very strong and bothered me quite a bit. I do have the oyster serum which I do like too but is not as emollient as this is. If only I could have a scent free version this would be perfect.

      Thank you for your honest reply! However, I would like to explain why we chose to fragrance this product: the silk when added to this formula smells not so good (to us it smelled like feet, big “EW” factor and a no-go for a facial product) which is exactly why we did not add silk to our unscented Oyster-C serum. That could be the missing emollient factor, OR the emollient factor could actually be coming from the fragrance oil itself as fragrances can change the texture of the product. We will consider decreasing the scent strength again, but this may or may not also decrease the emollient property that you are fond of. I hope that helps explain the complexities of making a product that will suit all desires and sometimes is not that simple as removing the fragrance for satisfaction ♡ -Mariah, owner/founder/formulator

      The fragrance is what makes it more emollient we think. We have toned down the scent in our newer batches so hopefully it is now more to your liking!

    I had the first batch of these, so the scent was quite strong. But they have changed the scent strength since then! It’s very creamy, but without it feeling heavy or like it would clog my pores once applied. I used it as a daily moisturizer after washing my face in the morning. My skin always felt hydrated and fresh for hours after I’d use it.

    I have tried a few different tallows at Permaearth, and this one is my favorite so far! I love how it feels on my skin and the way it fills in lines and wrinkles. My only complaint is the scent is a little too strong for me. I feel like the longer I use it, the more I have adjusted, but wish it was a little more subtle.

    I have super sensitive skin, I can break out with anything and everything but this has been amazing for my skin. It doesn’t clog my pores at all. I’m so happy to have found a non-toxic moisturizer for my face, FINALLY. And this is the absolute BEST scent! I love it so much!

      Hi Chante! We have taken customer feedback like this into consideration for this product and as a result have changed our formula. This new batch available now is made with about 1/3 of the scent strength, we decreased the scent strength and the scent amount by over half. We hope this will be pleasing to more users now!     I started using this about 3 weeks ago and it is the best! I wash my face with the peppermint soap and follow up with this on my face and chest. I had some red blotting on my chest and cleavage area; it almost looked like little veins that had busted, and they are 90% gone after using this product. I didn’t expect that out of this product. I did stop using it on my chest for 3 days to just see it it was a flook and it wasn’t. I still can’t believe it! The blotting is still repairing. I still have a half of a jar left, after a month. It glides on the skin and the smell relaxes me. The texture of my skin is changing. Any uneven skin tone is starting to even out. I just find this unbelievable. Will buy again.
