About BTMS: For the conditioning effects most of us are used to with commercial conditioners, this is the most natural way for us to achieve this effect! If you would like to avoid this ingredient for a more natural option (but not as effective or convenient), just use our hair oil before shampooing. You may also use a hair tea, apple cider vinegar or witch hazel rinse/spray after shampooing.

DURATION: For someone with long thick hair using the product heavily, our full bar would last about a month with every day use. It often takes a few months or more for most users to get through a full bar. We recommend starting with the half bar size. For drier scalps or textured hair, you may use it all over your head. Do NOT place in direct heat or light as bar will melt. Do NOT let sit in water as bar will dissolve, remember to please read our directions.

Some hair types find they need much less or no conditioner at all after switching to our shampoo soap bars.

Most hair types will still feel the need to use a conditioner to some degree, especially on the ends for dry, damaged, frizzy, or curly hair types.

Any hair type can use our conditioner (bar or liquid – directions to make liquid from bar are found below) if used correctly as needed and where needed.


  • Some experimentation will be needed to determine the correct amount and method for each individual depending on their hair type, which shampoo soap they pair with their conditioner (for instance, a honey shampoo is more moisturizing than a regular shampoo), the season or environment the hair is currently exposed to, the water quality, what other products they are using on their hair, their haircare history, and any other factors contributing to conditioner performance.
  • Some hair types may prefer some scents or essential oils to others. We suggest beginners first try our unscented bar for a clean slate.
  • New users can experiment with using the conditioner as a bar or turning the bar into a liquid to see which form they prefer (directions on how to turn bar into liquid are found at the bottom below)

Storage : Do not leave in water, or let water rest on a wet surface as they will dissolve or become very soft and goopy – unless that’s what you’re going for! Preferably, they should be stored in an area with good air flow and minimal surface contact. Store in a dry, safe place out of direct sunlight or heat. We recommend our soap dishes for storing your conditioner bar, you can find them here: 

  1. APPLY the conditioner bar directly onto your freshly washed, rinsed and dripping wet hair where you would like a conditioning, softening, detangling, and moisturizing effect. For dry scalps, they can start applying by swiping the bar directly on the hair on their head. For hair longer than neck length, follow these directions:

For medium-long length hair: Take the bar in your hand, holding the bar firmly while you swipe it down the length of your hair in the direction of hair growth, supporting your hair on the opposite side with the palm of your other hand. This should look like a sandwich: with your hands being the bread, the conditioner being the meat, and the hair being the cheese as you glide it down. Focus on dry spots, especially the ends of your hair.

Apply generously and take your time. This is not like liquid conditioner to just slap it on and go. Bars must be worked in with the water for optimal effect. You may also use it on your skin as a shower/bathing lotion too!

2. COMB the conditioner residue left in your hair with fingers or a comb to make sure the conditioner is spread evenly and thoroughly. You may need to add a little more water to comb it and spread it around smoothly. Apply only where your hair or scalp is dry – if your hair feels greasy after, then you applied too much, left it in for too long, did not rinse well, or applied it where your hair did not need it.

3. Let the conditioner bar SET in your hair while you wash your body/shave/etc. – 5 minutes or more being ideal for dry or damaged hair types. If you have a greasy hair type, try rinsing out immediately first to see if this is enough.

4. RINSE thoroughly OR LEAVE SOME IN with just a very light rinse. The leave-in method works wonders for some hair types: dry or curly or wavy types, NOT for greasy or straight/super fine hair types! For a natural curling effect after you get out of the shower/bath: leave in some conditioner, brush hair while still damp – *scrunch* – then let air-dry! How simple is that? 🙂

Leave-In Option

Using a leave-in conditioner can be very helpful with certain hair textures, especially with dry, damaged, curly or frizzy hair. If used this way, many of our customers have found they can eliminate all sorts of other products they normally would use (such as gels, hairspray, curling, etc.)

To do the leave-in option: do not rinse out all the conditioner after your wash.

If you need to apply more after the shower/bath application, simply wet the bar and rub it in your hands. Then use what is on the hands to comb through the hair, especially focusing on the ends.

Follow the instructions below to turn your bar into liquid if you think you might like this option better. You can use it everywhere on your hair, scalp, or skin and it leaves everything feeling silky smooth while hair is very shiny and manageable! This is our alternative replacement for a vinegar rinse or oil treatment.

Turn Your Bar Into Liquid:

  1. Measure a 10:1 ratio of water (or other liquid such as hair tea) to conditioner bar. For instance, you would want to measure out 35 ounces of liquid for a full size 3.5 ounce conditioner bar.
  2. Boil liquid then take away from heat – make sure you add back any liquid lost in the boiling process (35 oz for a full size bar)
  3. Add the conditioner bar to the near boiling liquid, stirring until dissolved. Make sure it is OFF any heat source.
  4. Keep stirring occasionally until not hot, but still warm and liquidy (pourable).
  5. Pour into proper container – we offer accessory pumps here.
  6. Let cool to room temperature before use.
  7. Use within six months to one year (when made with a purified water base, any other base will alter the non-refrigerated shelf-life).

Store in refrigerator for longer shelf life, especially if you used milk or other quickly expiring liquid. Use as fast as the liquid base would expire in the refrigerator.

Leftover Bits and Pieces

  • Liquid/Cream: follow the same directions above to make the liquid.
  • Remake/Remold: Heat all your extra broken conditioner pieces together slowly and carefully for short bursts on low level in the microwave – or for a short time on low level on the stovetop. This will turn the pieces into a liquid, which will harden again when cooled. You will get the best results when you pour the conditioner liquid as it is turning from clear to opaque: pouring a conditioner while it is too hot and clear will create an uneven texture that breaks apart easier. It helps to have a silicone container (such as a single silicone cupcake mold) that you can pour it into and pop back out again when it cools and hardens.
  • Using: leave the pieces next to the sink or shower in a container to rub in wet hands and apply to hair until nothing left of the bar pieces remain. You can even add to some hot water to a container and shake it well to create a very diluted conditioner water.

A non-negotiable 4% handling fee which includes required shipping insurance is now automatically added to every order during checkout for coverage in cases of lost or damaged packages (please see full policies for all details on these processes). This is due to the fact that postal services have decreased in quality to the point of where we need to physically drive and drop off the packages at the counter to get a receipt for verification as the postal service no longer verifies over five (5) package pickups from any business throughout our state of Indiana (and in other states as well). The postal services are also now requiring the receiver to bring in entire damaged package for any item damage claims, handing them over to the postal service for further inspection. We feel this is unreasonable for all parties, so instead we can simply replace/refund those instances with these fees. Also if a package is finally ruled as lost (which has become more common everywhere) we will be able to replace/refund  those with a swiftness that postal claim processes do not allow. We automatically cover any item that is damaged during transit with photo proof within 7 days of postal delivery confirmation on tracking. If a product is defective we will gladly refund or replace with your proof – this is up to our discretion according to our shop refund policies.

We gladly accept returns on any unused items within 30 days of purchase or delivery, in which the return costs must be covered by the customer and may be subject to a -10% restock fee. Please note that it is up to our discretion on whether or not the item is returned in acceptable condition: we will communicate with you if not to our standards when we receive the return(s). Any return shipping costs are covered by the customer if returning an unused and non-defective item. We cannot refund any shipping costs once the order has been shipped unless something happens to the package such as a damage or a loss. We are not liable for any unpaid customs fees, duty taxes, or postal rejections for international orders. If a package or item is returned to us in acceptable condition, we will issue a refund subject to a -10% restocking fee. We offer scent strength and intensity on the details of every product’s listing online. Please do not purchase a product described as medium-to-strong scented if you are known to be sensitive to stronger scents. Please do not purchase a scent that is described as light-to-medium if you only want a strong scent. We are not able to process refunds on used products based solely on scent dissatisfaction. Even 100% natural products with light amount of scent can cause sensitivity in some users.

Most seasoned Perma-Earth shampoo soap users only need to wash and condition every other day or up to once a week, not every day (although if one needs to wash every day they certainly may do so).

Since our shampoo soaps nourish the hair so much better than regular shampoos, most people find they need to use LESS conditioner than they did prior. So, how many washes will a full bar or a half bar last you? Well, it depends!


Our HALF SIZE (1.75 oz round) conditioner bars last an average of 3 months (from 1-6 months depending on the individual). If you convert the HALF SIZE bar to liquid you will make over 16-18 ounces of liquid.

  • Double the above for the FULL SIZE (3.5 oz rectangular) bars.

For someone with long and thick hair using the product heavily every day, our FULL SIZE bar would last only about a month. It often takes 3-12 months for most users to get through a FULL SIZE conditioner bar depending on how often and how much they need to condition.

We recommend starting with the HALF SIZE bar.

For drier scalps or textured hair, you may use it all over your head to help with dandruff or other issues. Will not leave hair or scalp greasy looking if rinsed out well.

Do NOT place in direct heat or light as bar will melt. Do NOT let sit in water as bar will dissolve, remember to please read our directions.

Undetermined – this product is very shelf-stable and can last a few years from manufacture date (on price tag) before going rancid as long as it is stored in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.

Please do not attempt to refrigerate to preserve as this can hasten expiry with condensation once thawed.

We do recommend using within 1 year of purchase for best results, as scents and contents do fade and break down over time.

Please refrain from purchasing our conditioner bars until your weather temperatures reach below 100°F/38°C as your conditioner bar could MELT slightly during transit if exposed to above these temperatures. Please watch your tracking information and try to grab your shipment from your mailbox as soon as you can.

We usually have problems with conditioner bars melting slightly between June-August months in Southern USA states.

Best remedy: stock up during the cooler spring/fall/winter seasons!!

Different (but not guaranteed ways) to prevent melting in hot temperatures are these options:

  1. Select “Sign for Delivery” service during checkout for a fee.
  2. A FREE option is to add in your order notes special instructions for the postal carrier to follow when delivering your package. **PLEASE NOTE that your carrier may or may not see or follow these instructions!!** These instructions will show on the shipping label in bold large lettering below the tracking barcode (in 78 characters or less).
  • One instruction is to have a cooler with icepacks and a water-proof container inside the cooler to place the package into. “PLEASE PLACE PACKAGE INSIDE BAG IN COOLER ON FRONT PORCH” – would be an example of an acceptable label instruction within the correct length of characters (up to 78 including spaces).
  • Another instruction would be – “PLEASE LEAVE WITH APARTMENT MANAGER IN FRONT OFFICE.” This is another example of acceptable length so it doesn’t sit in a hot outdoor mail box.

Waiting to stock up when temperatures are below 100°F/38°C is often the best choice to insure your conditioners do not melt.
