Sesame seed oil is scientifically known as Sesamum indicum. Historically, sesame was cultivated more than 5,000 years ago as a drought-tolerant crop, able to grow where other crops failed. Sesame seeds were one of the first crops processed for oil as well as one of the earliest condiments. Cited by ancient Greek writers, sesame was cultivated for oil in ancient Babylon. Archeologist have uncovered sesame seeds and elaborate oil extract equipment dating around 900-600 BCE near Yerevan in Armenia. The Sesame plant likely originated in Asia or East Africa.
