Linatural is a naturally derived 3-part preservative that is highly effective without knowingly compromising health issues. It’s considered a broad-spectrum preservative meaning it’s effective against negative pathogens, bacteria, yeast, and fungi for a short period of time (3-6 months).
Propanediol is the 1st component within this preservative system. Propanediol comes from non-GMO corn and is approved by Eco-Cert, NPA, Health Canada, and the USDA as a bio-based, all-natural preservative which is also Kosher certified. Propanediol is a less irritating and safer alternative to petrochemical-based propylene glycol. A bit of an overachiever, propanediol can function as a solvent, humectant, and even an emollient when used in skincare.
Ethylhexyl glycerin is the 2nd component within Linatural preservative system. It provides additional benefits over other preservatives such as being a skin conditioner while also fighting spoilage and bacterial growth. It is a clear, colorless, and slightly viscous fluid that acts as a humectant to help hydrate skin and boosts preservative efficacy. This ingredient has been shown to be effective as a replacement for paraben-based preservatives since it contains ZERO parabens (like all our ingredients here at Perma-Earth). Ethylhexylglycerin is a biodegradable preservative derived from vegetable glycerin. Ethylhexylglycerin (an alkyl glyceryl ether) is made via etherification. The most common method is to react sodium salt of acetone glycerol with hexadecyl iodide in boiling glycol dimethyl ether. This produces an acetone compound of α-hexadecyl glycerol that goes through hydrolysis with acetic acid. It is very safe to use externally, if one is not allergic to it.
Potassium Sorbate is the 3rd component within Linatural. It is widely used in certified organic products that tend to mold easily and commonly utilized to preserve foods, drinks, and personal care products. It is an odorless and tasteless salt synthetically produced from sorbic acid and potassium hydroxide. Potassium sorbate prolongs the shelf life of foods by stopping the growth of mold, yeast, and fungi. It was discovered in the 1850s by the French, who derived it from berries of the mountain ash tree. Its safety and uses as a preservative have been researched for the last fifty years. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recognizes it as generally safe when used appropriately.
Linatural adds moisturizing and conditioning properties. It functions as an emollient and increases the stability of pH control in place of conventional preservatives.
We use Linatural in our milk lotions, hair gel, mousse, Vitamineral serum, and conditioning spray: mostly any product with a high moisturization water content that has the potential to grow harmful mold, yeast, or bacteria.
